Card vs Bank (ACH) Fees in Field Service Software: Jobber, Housecall Pro and Workiz

How we put this together: We haven’t processed payments through these tools. This guide uses the fees each vendor publishes and works out what they cost on a sample invoice. The math is ours. Where a vendor doesn’t publish a rate, we say so instead of guessing.

Best for…

  • Larger invoices from repeat customers (a few hundred dollars and up): a 1% bank (ACH) fee is far below a card fee. All three vendors publish 1% for bank payments.
  • Small invoices and one-off customers: cards are easier to collect, but Jobber’s flat 30¢ makes small card payments cost a higher share. Our table below shows the percentage at four invoice sizes.
  • Cash-flow sensitive: bank payments are slower. Check the timing table before you push customers to ACH.

The short answer

  • On a $400 invoice, Jobber’s online card fee is $11.90 and its ACH fee is $4.00. That is $7.90 less per invoice on ACH (our math from Jobber’s published 2.9% + 30¢ and 1%).
  • Housecall Pro publishes “card processing rates as low as 2.59%” and 1% for bank payments. Its ACH FAQ adds that the fee “may vary based on your specific plan.”
  • Workiz publishes 1% for bank transfers. The ACH article we read doesn’t give a card rate.
  • Bank payments take longer on all three: from 2 days (Housecall Pro’s typical case) to 6-8 business days (Workiz).

2. A $400 invoice, card versus bank

Our math on a single $400 invoice, using only the published rates above. “You keep” is the invoice minus the processing fee, before tax and the plan price.

  • Jobber: ACH saves $7.90 on this invoice compared with an online card. If 20 invoices a month were paid by bank instead of card, that’s $158.00 a month, or $1,896.00 a year (our math, same $400 invoice each time).
  • Housecall Pro: at the best-case card rate, ACH saves $6.36 on $400. Your actual card rate may be higher than “as low as.”
  • Jobber instant payouts add a 1% fee. Jobber’s page doesn’t say what that 1% is calculated on, so we haven’t put a dollar figure on it.

3. Why small invoices cost more on Jobber cards

Jobber’s card fee has a flat 30¢. Our math on Jobber’s published rates:

On a phone, swipe sideways to see more columns.

InvoiceCard fee (2.9% + 30¢)Card fee as % of invoiceACH fee (1%)
$50$1.753.50%$0.50
$150$4.653.10%$1.50
$400$11.902.98%$4.00
$1,000$29.302.93%$10.00

The flat 30¢ is why a $50 card payment costs about 3.5% while a $1,000 payment costs about 2.9%. A 1% fee stays 1% at every size.

5. Questions to ask before you push customers to ACH

  • What is my exact card rate on my plan, and does it include a per-transaction fee? (Housecall Pro says the card rate starts at 2.59% and the ACH fee may vary by plan.)
  • How many business days until ACH money lands in my account, and can I speed it up? What does that cost?
  • What happens, and what do I pay, if an ACH payment fails or the customer disputes it?
  • Can I leave ACH on by default on invoices, or do I have to turn it on for each one? (Workiz says you select it every time you send an invoice.)

Bottom line

Card fees are fine for small and one-off jobs, and a flat 30¢ is what makes them sting on little invoices. For $300-plus invoices and repeat customers, a 1% bank fee saves real money (about $8 per $400 invoice on Jobber). The cost is time to payout and a few failure and dispute rules, so test one real ACH payment before you change how you bill.

Before you pay

  • Compare your plan price plus fees, not the plan price alone.
  • Run one real ACH payment and note the day it lands.
  • Confirm the failed-payment and dispute rules for your plan.

Ask support to confirm your rate in writing before you move customers over.
